At the end of each calendar year, I tend to sit down and think about what I want to achieve the following year… basically making new year resolutions but only focusing on the end goal, and figuring out how to get there throughout the year by trial and error. One of my goals for 2017 is to take Oscar to ten competitions (round the ring, one day events, dressage days, jumping days etc all included) and so I decided to start taking him off property as much as possible early in the year, so he gets used to trailering around to different locations fairly regularly.
If we’re being honest, it helps me to stress less on event days if I’ve been trailering out to new places too!
The beach is probably my favourite place to visit with Oscar at the moment! He’s still transitioning to barefoot life (will post an update on this asap), so the sand is super easy on his hooves and he’s a bit of a water horse which definitely ups the enjoyment factor!
Last month we went to Foxton Beach for a trot and a splash in the waves. Oscar was still on grass at this point and so he was on edge and fairly tense the whole time, but we still had fun and he trotted into the surf for our own version of aqua-cardio without hesitation.
We trot for around a hundred metres in above knee surf, and call it equi-aqua-cardio; it is something a bit different to add to our conditioning regime and is good fun too!
I had only planned to walk and trot for a low key outing and because he was pretty hyped up, but couldn’t resist a sneaky canter too!
We’re going to Taranaki next weekend for a one day event, so no beach visits this month but I really need to make an effort to get out there more often!
